Lucia Rivera (computer science)

When Lucia Rivera (she/her) began her co-op at the BC Ministry of Citizens’ Services, she had little knowledge of cybersecurity. But by the end of two work terms, the computer science student became something of an expert.

The changing face of cybersecurity

As a security analyst co-op student, Lucia helped develop an AI-powered cloud security playbook designed to automate the processes of assessing Software as a Service (SaaS) programs for security vulnerabilities.

“The project allowed the team to streamline their security assessments, reducing the time needed for reviews while improving accuracy,” says Lucia. “This project not only benefitted the organization but also highlighted my growth in a technical field that I initially knew little about.”

A focus on professional development

For Lucia, this involved completing over 40 professional development courses on topics ranging from project management, technical writing and cybersecurity.

She gained a strong foundation in cybersecurity skills through these courses, as well as the skills necessary for the project, marking her transformation from a beginner to someone confident and skilled in this field.

“What truly enriched my experience was the diversity of the topics,” says Lucia. “From Agile and project management to OpenShift, Python and other programming language, Power Apps, cultural awareness, diversity and inclusion, information security, and cybersecurity, and more, that helped me grow not only in cybersecurity or computer science, it helped me for real life.

Developing cultural competencies

Lucia worked on targeted projects as well as cross-functional team initiatives, collaborating with colleagues from different generations and roles.

“I had learning experiences on effective intergenerational communication and how to foster collaboration among a diverse team.

She also participated in the BC Public Service Co-op Advisory Committee, helping to organize events that promoted interaction and collaboration between co-op students across the province.

“Being part of the Co-op Advisory Board for eight months, organizing events across the BC Public Service and connecting with other students, helped me step out of my comfort zone and gain diverse perspectives,” says Lucia.

An international perspective

As an international student from Peru, Lucia’s ability to navigate a Canadian work environment and adapt to Canadian workplace culture was a key aspect of her growth.

“This experience gave me a deeper understanding of effective intergenerational communication, leadership, and collaboration in a multicultural environment.”

Training in project management

For Lucia, this was more than a cybersecurity co-op. “I gained exposure to project development from scratch, guided by my supervisors Sarah Browning, Rayna Attwood and Garry Mierzuak.

Garry also gave me the incredible opportunity to work alongside computer architects, security analysts, see how they work with real cybersecurity cases, and collaborate with full-time programmers, which was essential for my professional growth.”

A full circle moment

Lucia also had the unique opportunity to be part of the interview panel for new hires, where she learned how to assess candidates, conduct interviews, and contribute to the recruitment process.

“This work term is a testament to the transformative power of co-op experiences. It has further motivated me to pursue excellence in my career, with the goal of creating inclusive, innovative environments wherever I work.”
