Incident reporting & procedures
Emergency procedures & evacuation plans
Follow UVic’s emergency procedures for summoning necessary emergency services.
During a building evacuation, general contractors conducting minor servicing or renovation work must follow the directions of the Building and Floor Emergency Coordinators.
Prime Contractors must post the Emergency Procedures form at their worksite. They must also ensure that there is an evacuation plan specific to the site where they are working. This plan must include:
- fire safety
- extinguisher locations
- emergency exits
- mustering locations
- emergency telephone numbers
Spills
You must report any spills that result from activities performed on UVic premises. You can find reportable levels for substances in the applicable schedule in the .
If the spill creates an emergency situation, contact Campus Security immediately at 250-721-7599. A report must be faxed to OHSE at 250-721-6359 as soon as possible.
Environmental incidents
Contractors must comply with federal, provincial and regional environmental legislation and UVic environmental procedures. This ensures that the impacts of contractor activities are identified, assessed and mitigated.
If any activity or incident occurs that has the potential to damage the environment and is beyond the effective control of the contractor, they must immediately notify the FMGT Representative and Campus Security at 250-721-7599.
Medical emergencies
All contractors must ensure that first aid, emergency medical services and transportation are provided to their employees.
First aid may be available via Campus Security Services. Please review potential assistance with your FMGT Representative. Any access to campus services does not release the contractor from ensuring that emergency assistance is provided to employees.
Any calls to 9-1-1 must be followed up with a call to Campus Security at 250-721-7599. Campus Security will help first responders locate the injured workers.
Incident reporting
You must report an incident to the FMGT Representative immediately if it results in:
- serious injury or illness
- damage to property
- damage to equipment
- environment contamination
- unplanned or uncontrolled fires
- explosions
- floods
- collapse or failure of a building or structure
If an incident results in a recordable injury (time loss and/ or medical aid required) or if a regulatory authority must be contacted, the FMGT Representative must be notified concurrently. A copy of the investigation report must be forwarded upon completion. It is the contractor’s responsibility to contact the appropriate regulatory authority.
