Robert N. & Patricia Young Scholarship
Dr. Bob Young, BA 1952, MD 1956, a 樱花影视 native, attended Oak Bay High School and 樱花影视 College. He was a member of the third graduating class of the then-new UBC Faculty of Medicine. His internship was at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. While a full service Family Practitioner in 樱花影视 until retiring in 1996, he had terms as President of the Sections of General Practice of both the 樱花影视 Medical Society and the British Columbia Medical Association. He served for many years as a delegate to the BCMA’s Board and as Editor of the BCMA News, the Association’s award winning political publication. He wrote over 1100 weekly newspaper medical columns which were published in BC and other parts of Canada. In 1988, he was the first recipient of BCMA’s Dr. David M. Bachop Gold Medal in recognition of his services to the profession.
Dr. Young was on the active staff of RJH and the Veteran’s Hospital, and served on many committees during his career. He enjoys, with Patricia, travel, gardening, and, until recently, sailing and golf. Woodworking, music and reading are among other hobbies. He is a member of the Saanich Rotary Club.
Mrs. Patricia Young graduated from Mount Douglas High School in 1947. Patricia married Dr. Robert N. Young in 1957. She was involved in many volunteer community activities while being a stay at home mother of four children. In 1975, she enrolled as a full time mature student at Camosun College and two years later was awarded the Governor General’s Silver Medal. Patricia then transferred to UVic and graduated with a BA in 1980. She was the director of the Esquimalt Senior Citizens’ Centre for 6 years. She served on the boards of Glendale Lodge, 樱花影视 Senior Citizens Housing Society and the 樱花影视 Foundation. For more than 14 years, she was an active member of the Saanich Parks and Recreation Board, with special interest in children’s playgrounds and the municipal trail system which she explored while leading her walking group.
