Nurse Educator (MN)

Our Nurse Educator (NUED) graduate program is a course-based and practice-oriented degree option that will prepare you for nurse educator roles in many sectors.

You will gain competencies to work across healthcare and academic settings and will learn how to influence nursing practices in health facilities and in nursing education.

We offer either a capstone or research thesis that integrates theory into nursing practices.

Admission requirements

If your first language is not English, then you must provide proof of language proficiency. Learn more about language requirements, including what exemptions and tests are allowed.

Program specific requirements

  • Completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in nursing from an institution recognized by UVic with a minimum B+ (77%) average in the final two years of your degree

Prerequisite courses

  • a final grade of B or higher in an upper level (300 or 400) undergraduate statistics course from a recognized post-secondary educational institute
  • an interactive Indigenous cultural safety course for health providers within 5 years of application (e.g., PHSA San'yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training – Core Health)

As part of your application, you must submit:

  • A personal resumé including your education background, employment history, professional/academic affiliations and other achievements such as publications or awards.
  • Verification of your registration as an active practicing RN.
  • Two assessment reports: one from an academic referee and one from an employment referee
    • We recommend that your referees attach a letter of reference in addition to the assessment report.
    • If it has been more than five years since you last attended a post-secondary institution, we recommend that you include two assessment reports from current or former employers in place of academic referees.
  • personal statement (max. 500 words in essay style [narrative form]) that clearly addresses the attached guideline questions in detail.
    • Optional: If you wish, you can attach a short sample of your professional or academic writing i.e. excerpt from journal article, formal report, etc

Note: We strongly recommend you have the equivalent of a minimum of two years' full-time recent nursing practice as a registered nurse, preferably in your chosen area of concentration, before you apply.

Nursing practice experience

Nursing practice experiences are essential components of the nursing program.

If you are completing hours outside the province/territory/state where you are currently registered, you must acquire active practicing registration in the jurisdiction where these practicum hours take place. You are responsible for any arrangements and associated costs related to your nursing practice experiences.
