Six UVic scholars again listed among the best in the world

Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers have authored multiple papers that rank in the top one per cent by citations for their field(s) and publication year. Included in the calculations are papers published in the last 11 years and those presenting novel findings (not retrospective perspectives).
Here is a small selection of reasons that they have earned their place in this influential company:
Tom Gleeson (Engineering/Earth and Ocean Sciences/Centre for Global Studies), also recently elected to the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, is widely recognized for his deep interdisciplinary and collaborative research on groundwater. This is his third year on the list.
Ryan Rhodes (Education) joins the Highly Cited list for the sixth year in a row. In the past 11 years, he’s published more than 300 refereed papers (not counting reviews), 23 book chapters, 3 textbooks and has almost 40,000 citations.
Makhsud Saidaminov (Science) Canada Research Chair in Advanced Functional Materials. A recent Nature Communications article, one of 19 publications this year, has already been accessed almost 7400 times. This is his fifth consecutive year on the list.
Yang Shi (Engineering), elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2025, has pioneered innovative research that has advanced the fields of networked and distributed control, Model Predictive Control, mechatronics and cyber-physical systems, improved industry practice and broadly impacted society. This is his eleventh year on the list.
Marie-Ève Tremblay (Health), Canada Research Chair in Neurobiology of Healthy Cognitive Aging, published 21 manuscripts in 2020, 28 in 2021, 31 in each of 2022 and 2023, 38 in 2024 and 26 (so far) in 2025. This is her fifth year on the list.
Xuebin Zhang (Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium) has a long career at the forefront of climate science and widely shares knowledge with scientists, the public and policy makers. This is his fifth year on the list.
