For the second year, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects of the ShanghaiRanking recognized the 樱花影视 (UVic) as a world leader for ocean and climate research, placing first in Canada for both oceanography (35 globally) and atmospheric science (41 globally).

“The extraordinary researchers and research culture at the 樱花影视 are responsible for these outstanding results. These rankings reflect UVic’s research accomplishments in areas such as ocean science, climate and energy systems and we are exceedingly proud to see these achievements recognized.”  Lisa Kalynchuk, Vice-president research and innovation, UVic

UVic’s strength in ocean science comes from a sustained record of research achievement in this area. Since 2006, UVic has been home to Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), which operates world-leading ocean observing facilities in the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic and Antarctic oceans. Now one of Canda’s largest research facilities, ONC contributes to groundbreaking science and climate change solutions, from ocean carbon dioxide removal to coastal earthquake and tsunami warning systems. Earlier this year, UVic was also recognized for its leadership in ocean research when it ranked first in Canada in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for life below water (SDG 14) in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking.

ShanghaiRanking Highlights

  • First in Canada and 35 globally in oceanography
  • First in Canada and 41 globally in atmospheric science
  • Second in Canada in public administration, top 100 globally
  • Third in Canada in earth sciences, top 100 globally
  • Third in Canada in automation and control, 38 globally

The first-place finish in atmospheric science reflects the work of many of UVic’s climate researchers, including those associated with the UVic-led Accelerating Community Energy Transformation initiative, which aims to identify place-based clean-energy systems that can be scaled to communities around the world, and the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium, a UVic-based climate services centre that helps the public and private sectors understand and manage climate-related risks. It also its testament of research initiatives such as the Clean Air (CLAIR) lab at UVic. The university has also previously ranked first in Canada for the United Nations SDG for climate action (SDG 13) in the THE Impact Ranking.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects also recognized UVic for its strengths in public administration, ranking in second place for universities in Canada and in the top 100 globally for , and earth sciences, ranking third in Canada and in the top 100 globally for research that creates critical new knowledge about the world.
