Inaugural VPRI postdoc research day a huge success

June 19, 2025

On May 6, OVPRI hosted the first Postdoc Research Day providing an opportunity for post-doctoral fellows to connect and showcase their research. 28 post-doctoral fellows from across campus presented their research in short, non-technical 5-minute talks. Presenters represented 13 different departments, three research centres, and five faculties, and research topics ranged from chemical catalysts to accountability in supply chains to kelp genetics. The event also featured a panel on academic careers with three UVic Faculty Members, who shared their own post-doctoral experience and career advice.

The top three presenters, as judged by faculty members in attendance, were awarded cash prizes. Congratulations to:

  1. Zachary Gould, ACET and IESVic, Decarbonization through District Energy Development: The Climate Housing Nexus
  2. Alex Hare, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Listening in on Bowhead Whale Conservation challenges through Passive Acoustic Monitoring
  3. Maria Laura Sosa Ponce, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Old Cells, New Mutations:
The Aging Cell’s Struggle to Maintain Genomic Integrity

The inaugural event was a great success with over 50 attendees, representing nearly 1/3 of all post-doctoral fellows at UVic. Through this event, post-doctoral fellows were able to practice translating their research for a broad audience, make new connections, and build the post-doctoral fellow community at UVic.
