Sweden鈥檚 Lund University honours Margaret-Anne Storey
June 19, 2025

UVic software engineering professor and Canada Research Chair Margaret-Anne Storey has received Lund University’s highest honour. On May 23, she received an honorary doctorate from the prestigious Swedish institution in recognition of her pioneering contributions to the development of software engineering in the field of socio-technical systems.
Her research has led to new theories and insights about how software tools, communication media and data visualizations can be leveraged to improve the ways that software engineers and knowledge workers explore, understand, analyze and share complex information and knowledge. In turn, these theories have transformed critical engineering systems and tools that are developed and used by industry practitioners, research scientists and nonprofit partners. She has also been a role model for improving gender balance in the information technology world, both in academia and business.
“I am deeply honoured and proud to receive this recognition,” says Storey. “I’m especially grateful to my colleagues there for nominating me, and for the opportunity to collaborate during my time as a guest professor. I also want to thank my colleagues and students at the 樱花影视, whose ideas, questions and dedication continue to inspire and challenge me.
“This honour reflects our shared efforts and contributions to software engineering research. It is a privilege to be part of both communities and I look forward to continuing our work together.”
Storey has strong connections to Lund University through research collaborations and her time as Lise Meitner Professor from 2016-18. During that period, she helped the institution to establish software research with a design science perspective. Along with well-cited scientific publications, her impacts include inspiring the development of a new course in the theory of science for engineers.
Lund University considers Storey's work an asset for research, teaching and student recruitment, and says she has strengthened their international collaborations and profile areas in AI and digitalisation.
“Dr. Storey’s honorary doctorate from Lund University is a testament to her international leadership in software engineering research,” says Mina Hoorfar, dean of Engineering and Computer Science at UVic. “Peggy’s expertise, collaborative spirit and commitment to mentoring continue to elevate our faculty’s research, teaching and impact, and we are very fortunate to have her as part of our academic community at UVic. This recognition from one of Europe’s top universities reflects the global significance of her contributions, and we are proud to celebrate this well-deserved honour with her.”
