Humboldt Research Award
December 03, 2025
Oliver Schmidtke, outgoing long-time director of UVic’s Centre for Global Studies, has received the Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
As one of Germany’s most prestigious international research distinctions, nominees are "researchers whose fundamental discoveries, new theories or findings have had a lasting effect on their discipline beyond their immediate research area and who are expected, moreover, to continue producing outstanding research in the future."
The €80,000 award will support Schmidtke’s 2026 research stay at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies at the University of Osnabrück, where he will focus on questions of migration, democratic resilience and transatlantic collaboration.
“At a time when questions of migration and democracy are shaping political life across Europe and Canada, this award provides the rare opportunity to work collaboratively across borders and disciplines,” Schmidtke says. “I am deeply honoured and excited for the year ahead.”
