Why choose Germanic Studies at UVic?

Build your German language skills, explore Germanic cultures and study or work in a German-speaking country. In this program you'll examine topics such as German language, film, culture and the Holocaust while developing strong communication and intercultural skills. You can choose a major in Germanic studies or take courses alongside other areas of interest, including Slavic studies.

Hands-on learning

Immerse yourself in German language, culture and history with hands-on learning opportunities that bring your coursework to life.

I-Witness Field School

Travel through Central Europe to study how the Holocaust is memorialized. Visit memorial sites, museums and cultural spaces while learning how the lessons of the Holocaust continue to shape the world today.

Performing German Drama

Combine theatre history with performance in this unique course. Learn about German drama, then collaborate with classmates to stage a play in German at the end of the term. (This course is taught in English.)

Study abroad in Germany

Strengthen your German skills and experience life in a German-speaking country. Options include: Summer program in Kassel Study abroad experience in Freiburg Exchange program in Marburg

Co-operative Education (Co-op)

  • Through UVic’s Co-op program, you’ll apply what you learn in paid, career-related positions that count toward your degree—and give you a head start after graduation.
  • Co-op is available to everyone, including international students with co-op work permits.
  • On average, 70 percent of UVic Co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand.
  • Unlike at some universities, at UVic, you don’t have to compete for a spot in Co-op.

Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum Co-op

Gain meaningful work experience at one of the world’s most significant memorial sites. Spend a summer as a co-op student at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, supporting education, interpretation and remembrance work.

  • Germanic and Slavic Studies Course Union: Join a welcoming group that hosts events like cooking workshops, film nights, language cafés, Discord meetups and cultural activities.
  • Work study opportunities: Work on campus as a German language tutor. Support other students’ learning, build leadership experience and grow your own language skills.
  • Language Café: Drop in for free German tutoring and conversation practice.

International students

Get Canadian work experience after you graduate

  • Full-time international students who graduate from a bachelor’s degree program at UVic may be eligible for a post-graduation work permit in Canada for up to three years.
  • Refer to the for eligibility criteria.
