About Brad

Dr. Buckham directs PRIMED (Pacific Regional Institute for Marine Energy Discovery). Launched in 2017, PRIMED applies marine renewable energy (MRE) resource data, computational design tools for offshore systems and energy system modeling to complete feasibility and FEED level studies of community scale marine energy projects. This work includes development of computer models of the tidal and wave resources across the BC Coast, identification of strategic MRE development zones and deployment of field measurement devices. Since 2007, this work has produced comprehensive resource data sets that adhere to challenging international standards and which are now used as a foundation for MRE project design. Leveraging this data and a long history of developing computer simulation tools for moored ocean infrastructure with Dynamic Systems Analysis Ltd. (DSA), the PRIMED team builds novel simulations of proposed MRE converter devices and assess performance at potential BC sites. With an ability to assess performance while remaining at arm’s length to any commercial technology, the PRIMED team provides comprehensive and unbiased technical support for community leaders working to implement MRE technology in their communities. In that role, the team is primarily engaged with coastal BC First Nations.
