Personal statement guidelines
Your personal statement must have 2 parts:
Part A - Narrative format
Write a personal statement (up to 750 words) about why you want to study at UVic Law and what would make you a good fit. This should include your background, experiences and personal qualities.
We look for statements that are authentic, intentional and purposeful, such as:
- who are you?
- why law?
- why UVic?
- what do you bring to the community and environment at UVic law, and beyond?
JD/JID personal statement:
- describe your connection to and/or involvement in an Indigenous community
- reasons why you want to pursue the program
- how you will enrich the learning environment at the faculty
Part B - Outline format
In outline form, list any academic, work, extracurricular or community experiences, achievements and accolades—i.e. summarize what you did, evaluate what you learned and reflect on its applicability to law school/your future—that you’d like the admissions committee to know.
Please simplify language as much as possible. Spell out acronyms, detail definitions and help us understand your lived experience in plain language.
Your personal statement (especially Part A and B), along with your academic record and LSAT score, will be used to assess entrance scholarship eligibility.
