Travel & conference funding
The graduate program in Law and Society offers funding for LLM and PhD students for conferences, fieldwork travel and scholarship interviews. Each type has a different application process, so read instructions carefully or contact the graduate coordinator.
If you can’t cover costs upfront, let the graduate coordinator know before booking travel—advances may be available with at least 30 days' notice.
Conferences
The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) and Graduate Students' Society (GSS) offer limited travel funding for conferences.
- to apply, submit the FGS travel & conference funding form to the scholarships assistant before your trip
- apply as early as possible, but no more than 4 months before travel
- if you haven’t been accepted to present yet but have registered, apply now and update your status once accepted
View criteria and how to apply on the FGS travel funding page.
How it works
The law graduate program offers extra funding based on your FGS application.
You must send the graduate coordinator your FGS funding approval or waitlist emails and a copy of your FGS travel grant application. If FGS doesn’t fund you, the law program adds 25% to the standard FGS amount (e.g., $600 becomes $750). If FGS does fund you, the law graduate program gives 75% of the standard amount (e.g., $600 becomes $450), totalling $1,050 combined.
If funds run low, priority goes to students who haven’t received funding before. They may also limit funding to certain types of conferences. Funds can and do run out, so apply early so as not to be disappointed.
You’ll be reimbursed for travel expenses after you return, but only if your claims meet university regulations. See the travel claim instructions for details.
Field work & archival research
The Law graduate program offers limited travel funds for thesis/dissertation research only.
Apply only after completing your Human Research Ethics Board (HREB) application, candidacy exam (PhD) and with your supervisor’s approval. For archival research, confirm relevant materials exist.
Maximum funding:
- LLM students: $2,000
- PhD students: $4,000
Funds are limited and not guaranteed. You can apply for smaller amounts over multiple trips but stay within the maximum. Funds must be used within 6 months.
Note: due to budget limits, full funding may not be available to multiple students at once.
How it works
- your supervisor must sign your application, and you must attach a brief thesis/dissertation description (up to 5 pages)
- reimbursements follow university expense rules—see travel claim instructions
- a Law graduate studies subcommittee reviews all applications
If you transferred to the PhD program without completing your LLM, any LLM funding you received will be deducted from your $4,000 PhD limit.
If you started a new PhD after completing a UVic LLM, you can apply for up to the full PhD amount.
Scholarship interviews
If you’re nominated by UVic for a scholarship interview outside 樱花影视, the Law graduate program will match the university’s funding to help cover your travel costs, if funds are available.
