Decarbonisation at UVic

Decarbonisation is the process of reducing or eliminating carbon emissions, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2), to mitigate climate change. It involves transitioning away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency and implementing technologies that capture and store carbon.

UVic believes that decarbonisation is important because:

  • Decarbonisation is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are the primary drivers of global warming and climate change.
  • Many countries and organizations are aiming for net-zero emissions, meaning they aim to achieve a balance between emitting and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Decarbonisation is a key pathway to achieving this goal.
  • By reducing carbon emissions, decarbonisation helps protect ecosystems, biodiversity and the planet from the harmful effects of climate change.
  • Decarbonisation can stimulate innovation, create new jobs in the renewable energy sector and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient economy.

In 2025, we increased our target to reduce the carbon intensity of our investments from at least 45% to at least 50% by 2030. We exceeded this target initially in 2022 and have continued to exceed this target since then. Our progress in decarbonising the working capital investments can be found in the annual Responsible Investment Reports.
