Guidelines for nominating LLM thesis external examiners
Thesis draft submission
Submit a full draft of your thesis to your supervisory committee at least 6 weeks before official submission. This should not be their first time seeing your work.
Examiner nomination
If your committee agrees the thesis is near exam-ready, submit a list of potential external examiners to the graduate program coordinator using the LLM thesis external examiner nomination form 4 weeks before exam-ready thesis submission.
Examiner requirements
Nominees must:
- hold a graduate degree in law or a related field
- be outside UVic Law
- have relevant expertise
- have no conflict of interest (e.g., not a former teacher or referee)
Choose examiners who will assess the work fairly, even if they disagree with it. It’s okay to suggest someone respected in the field, as long as they remain objective.
Selection process
The graduate program director will review nominees, decide who to contact and may ask questions to confirm suitability. If needed, new names may be requested.
No agreement on nominees
In rare cases where no agreement is possible, the director may select an examiner in consultation with the graduate studies committee (excluding your committee members).
Examiner contact & process
All communication with examiners is handled by the graduate coordinator or program director. You won’t know the examiner’s identity until the process is complete.
Conflict of interest
If a director is on your committee, another faculty member will take over the director’s duties to avoid conflicts of interest.
Note: neither students nor committee members may contact nominees about the thesis until after the exam process is completed.
