Indigenous admission stream
In our commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice at UVic Law, we acknowledge that our admissions processes have inadequately responded to the systemic discrimination experienced by Indigenous students and the underrepresentation of Indigenous students in Canadian law schools.
We have created an Indigenous Admission Stream to respond to these historic and ongoing inequities within the UVic Law community, and the profession more broadly, by intentionally seeking to admit more Indigenous students. Applicants who identify as Indigenous may, but are not required to, apply through our Indigenous Admission Stream for the JD program.
Eligibility
Indigenous applicants will be considered only for the program they apply to but may submit applications to both the JD and JD/JID programs. The JD and JD/JID programs are 2 separate programs, each requiring a separate application.
Each application is reviewed holistically, with emphasis on personal statements and life experiences, not just academic metrics. The admissions committee—trained in anti-racism, decolonization and equity—reviews all applications. There are no quotas, and all applications are assessed using the same process.
Admission decisions in this stream are holistic and consider equity, anti-racism, decolonization and inclusion.
For more info on the Indigenous admission stream, visit the UVic Academic Calendar.
Application deadline
First-year application deadline: December 1 at 4 p.m. PST.
Applications must be complete with all required documents by the deadline. Incomplete applications won’t be considered.
Indigenous admission statement
Your Indigenous admission statement is your opportunity to share your voice and experiences. There's no set format—you could speak about your connection to the Indigenous community (or lack thereof), your strengths, goals, reasons for applying and anything else you wish to highlight.
All application info is confidential and shared only with admissions and academic staff. If admitted, your file may be used to support your studies. Please remove any sensitive personal details.
While no word limit, we recommend 1-3 pages. We value concise language in our review.
View the UVic Academic Calendar for more information.
Specific requirements
In addition to the requirements to apply to the first-year stream—including Parts A & B of your personal statement—applicants to the Indigenous admission stream must include:
- a statement describing your connection to an Indigenous community (or lack thereof, and the reasons why)
- two letters of reference sent to us by your referees:
- one must fully describe your connection(s) to the Indigenous community
- one must be an academic reference
