Our Indigenous summer course is open to law students, graduate students from Canada or abroad, practicing lawyers seeking continuing professional development (CPD) credit and professionals in the field of Indigenous law.

The Indigenous Law Research, Method and Practice course explores how to understand, research and apply Indigenous legal traditions. Students will examine challenges in accessing and using these laws and engage with them in a respectful, supportive setting.

Credit students

UVic Law students register as usual for summer courses.

Note: upper-year undergrads may apply but must show they can handle graduate-level work.

• personal statement (max 750 words)
• law school academic record
• letter of permission (if currently in a JD program elsewhere)

Summer tuition and fees are announced in spring in the UVic Academic Calendar.

Non-credit students

If you're a lawyer, student or professional in the field and want to take this graduate-level course for non-credit, follow the steps below. You'll receive a certificate of completion.

Note: lawyers can earn 39 hours of CPD credit.

Applications for the Indigenous summer intensive course will be accepted until all spots are filled.

• payment of $39.50 application fee

Note: admission to summer session does not mean admission to a UVic Law degree program.

Course fees

If you accept an offer, a non-refundable $350 deposit is due by the deadline in your admission letter. It counts toward the $1,000 course fee. The remaining balance is due before classes start.

Housing

Summer residence is available to current UVic students (undergraduate and graduate) who are registered in classes from May to August, or have a co-op work term with a local employer.

Residence Services provides options for summer students for summer student housing.
