The JD/JID is a 4-year program combining classroom learning and community-based field studies. You’ll graduate with 2 professional degrees—a full Common Law Juris Doctor (JD) and a Juris Indigenarum Doctor (JID).

The program engages with legal orders from Coast Salish, Cree, Kwakwaka'wakw, Secwépemc, among others throughout the world, focusing on areas such as governance, justice, child welfare, family roles and land management. The program also includes fields schools where you will work with Indigenous communities, learn from local experts and observe Indigenous law in action.

Hands-on learning

Co-op

Apply what you learn through the Law Work Experience Program (LWEP). You will be able to complete one full-time, paid work term with a legal employer. LWEP is managed through the law co-op office.

Experiential learning

We offer several centres and clinics that provide you with real legal experience alongside your regular studies.

Exchange

Participating in an exchange can enrich your learning experience as you study law at other universities for credit towards your UVic JD and JD/JID. We have student exchange agreements with law schools around the world.

Mooting

UVic Law students take part in moot competitions across Canada, with some teams reaching the international level. These simulated court experiences help students build legal skills through judged competitions and some offer academic credit.

Amicus Program

The Amicus Program is a unique UVic Law student support initiative that plays an active role in engaging, advising and assisting students.

Careers

Our careers office facilitates student placements in law firms, government and public interest organizations. It can also provide resources and one-on-one career counselling as you begin your legal career.

Student supports

You’ll have access to UVic support resources like the Student Wellness Centre, and the Centre for Accessible Learning. Indigenous students also have tailored supports available through the Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement (IACE).
